District unveils capstone program: senior internships, job-shadow days and career education

Eric Vent, the program coordinator, presented a revamped capstone that aims to expand internships and career education for Rockport High students. "The senior internships are available to all 12th grade students who are in good academic standing," Vent said, describing eligibility as credit-complete students with required community-service hours. He explained internships are planned to run "for 30 hours a week for 6 weeks," beginning April 7, with students submitting proposals, keeping weekly logs and completing reflective presentations at the program's end.
Vent also described two related components: job-shadow days open to juniors and seniors (scheduled for Jan. 27) and a broader, multi-year push to integrate career education across grades. He said the district will require CORI checks for site supervisors and coordinate site visits by the program coordinator, and flagged transportation, equity of access and scheduling (AP exams, music commitments) as implementation items to resolve. Committee members encouraged proactive outreach to businesses, use of minibuses for transportation and potential fundraising or foundation support to remove financial barriers for students.
