Thurman says reconciliation could be path for Save America Act but warns 50‑vote hurdle remains

Senator Thurman described the challenges of using a budget resolution and reconciliation to advance the Save America Act and related priorities, saying the process "is very challenging" and could implicate a dozen or more committees. "Some suggest have been up to 12 or 13 or 15," he said, noting that if many committees are implicated, amendments that would otherwise require 60 votes could become 50-vote amendments under reconciliation rules.
Thurman said the practical effect is that sponsors need 50 votes not only to get on the bill but then to defeat amendments and finally to pass it. "And obviously that creates an uphill challenge ... And so we're taking a hard look at it. But we also know we have to have 50 votes. And at the moment, as I've said before, we're probably not there," he said, adding that senators have about a week to decide how to proceed.
