The Finance Committee reviewed four bid items submitted to the Road Department for 2026 projects across townships. Lowest bids included Michigan Paving for Benton Township HMA at $108,670 (Rieth-Riley bid $114,786) and Michigan Paving $193,655 for Lincoln Township (Rieth-Riley $199,913.50); Rieth-Riley submitted the apparent low for Niles Township scratch & seal at $283,536 versus Michigan Paving $308,355; Buchanan Township low was Rieth-Riley $148,299 versus Michigan Paving $152,545. Projected budgets were shown for each item (e.g., $150,000; $200,000; $250,000; $350,000).
Commissioner Jon Hinkelman moved and Commissioner Rayonte Bell supported a motion to refer the bids to the department with approval to proceed with the lowest bidder provided the bidder is an approved responsible bidder meeting specifications. The motion also authorized the County Administrator to execute any subsequent contract associated with the bid and contract modifications up to $10,000. The committee carried the motion and required departments to submit communications if they wish to proceed with a non-lowest bidder, including justification.
