County to seek contamination assessment for Three Oaks garage after roof failure

Berrien County Road Department plans to hire Point Blue to assess potential contamination at the Three Oaks garage after determining repair costs exceed the building's value; the county will leave the slab in place to allow aggregate storage. Mark Heyliger, of the Berrien County Road Department, told the Administration Committee that the roof of the Three Oaks garage "has developed holes" and that repair costs exceed the value of the building. He said he is asking the county to enter an agreement with Point Blue to assess and identify any contamination before the county proceeds with disposition decisions.
Heyliger said Point Blue's work would not remove the existing slab so the site could continue to be used to store aggregates. He also reported two operational follow-ups: a 1:00 p.m. meeting with Wightman & Associates to obtain Engineering of Record information, and outreach from Baroda Township about road transfers if the Village dissolution proceeds. Chairman Jim Curran asked staff to prepare a formal policy for accepting transferred roads; Heyliger noted the county is not required to accept them.
Action status: Resolution A2602155 was discussed and is scheduled to appear before the committee next week; no vote was taken at the Feb. 19 meeting.
