The Mendon Township Planning Commission opened a separate discussion on data centers on July 21 and instructed staff to research zoning options and master-plan alignment. Chair Melissa Kline said the issue "is entirely different" from renewable-energy permitting and recommended the commission task members to prepare language for a special meeting instead of waiting until the October quarterly meeting.
Zoning administrator Matt Jorgensen urged the commission to address data centers in a master plan and to ensure any zoning ordinance is consistent with that plan to avoid lawsuits. "When going to court the Zoning Ordinance should be in alignment with the Master Plan," Jorgensen said. Commissioners agreed to have Jorgensen and counsel prepare recommended language and return with a report at a special meeting to be published in advance.
