Council adopts community-center fee schedule after debate; rules tabled

The Huntsville Town Council voted to adopt a Community Center fee schedule at its Feb. 20 meeting while tabling the detailed rules that would govern access and permitted uses. The fee schedule adopted in Resolution 2025-02-20A sets a $16-per-hour per-court rate for pickleball and establishes standard, large and mega-event classifications with corresponding base rates and refundable-deposit tiers. Mayor Richard L. Sorensen recused himself from the fee discussion because of a personal business interest; the remaining councilors approved the resolution 4-0 after clerical edits requested by Council Member Artie Powell.

The decision followed extensive public comments and a work-session debate about whether the hall should prioritize pickleball revenue or broader community uses. Residents at the meeting and in a written attachment said they want more transparency on operating and utility costs and asked for data to justify rates. Building manager Rex Harris told the council the committee estimates operating costs near $3,000 per month and that pickleball play was expected to offset much of that expense. Councilors agreed to adopt the fee schedule now and to continue refining event classifications and rules in a subsequent work session. "We chose pickleball for the greatest revenue," Harris said in prior committee meeting notes that were circulated to the council and public (Attachment #6).

The council tabled Resolution 2025-02-20B, the set of community center rules and Exhibit A (house rules that restrict certain activities to protect the floor and stage), citing time for additional clerical revisions and the need for more public input. Staff and council directed a follow-up work session to address resident requests for resident discounts, punch-card options and clearer documentation of how fees were calculated.
