Sheriff reports staffing gaps, SWET sees uptick in fentanyl and firearms

Sheriff Heit delivered an operational update to the Berrien County Administration Committee on Feb. 12, reporting routine metrics and staffing changes. "There are currently two inmates in the hospital," Heit said, and he noted two recent DOC Academy graduates joining the department this month.
Undersheriff Sanders summarized enforcement numbers and staffing pressures: Animal Control currently has one officer on long-term medical leave, and the department is considering an additional hire for that unit. Heit and Sanders said the SWET (special weapons and enforcement team) has experienced an increase in fentanyl-related activity and firearms cases; the unit is funded for five positions but currently operates with four. Committee members were told February 20 is Rockey Adam’s last day; the department has promoted Dave Albers to captain and will conduct interviews to fill ensuing vacancies.
Committee members discussed service levels and coordination with the administrator’s office; the update closed with no formal motions or votes related to staffing.
