State lawmakers present appropriations totaling $800,000 for Miramar projects

State lawmakers told the Miramar City Commission on Oct. 1 that they secured new state appropriations for city projects. Dr. Barbara Sharif and Representative Marie Woodson each signed checks and briefed commissioners on how the funding will be used and on opportunities to request additional appropriations during the current legislative session.
"It is with tremendous pride that I present a $300,000 appropriation for the South Central Southeast Focal Point Senior Center, now named the Alexandra Davis Senior Center," Dr. Barbara Sharif said during the presentation. She also announced an additional $500,000 appropriation for the Miramar flood mitigation project, phase 5, citing long‑running flood concerns in parts of the city.
Representative Marie Woodson described the legislative process for appropriations and said her office and the senator’s office must each secure matching amounts before funds are included in the budget. "This year, again, I bought you a total of $800,000," Woodson said, adding that the district had secured other appropriations across several municipalities.
City officials thanked both members of the state delegation and noted the appropriations will support senior services and resilience work. The commission was invited to provide project lists and supporting paperwork to the lawmakers to aid in securing and protecting appropriations in the upcoming session.
Next steps: officials said the signed checks will be included in the city’s records and that staff will coordinate with the state offices to finalize paperwork and project timelines.
