The City Commission adopted a resolution July 28 to establish a Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC) intended to involve local high-school and middle-school students in civic projects, leadership development and council advising. Community Development staff presented a proposed structure of 16 youth commissioners (three from each high-school grade, one representative from each middle school 8th grade cohort and a hoped-for NMSU freshman), monthly meetings and workshops, and a mentorship program involving community organizations.
Shelly Barron and Sheree Edmond described funding from the Sacramento Mountains Foundation to begin the program and a recruitment schedule beginning at the back-to-school block party; they asked for the commission's approval to swear in youth on Sept. 8 and hold an inaugural orientation and meeting in mid-September. "We are proposing to establish a mayor's youth advisory commission... to actively involve high school students in community decision making, leadership development, and future planning for the city of Alamogordo," Barron said. The commission voted 7-0 to adopt the resolution.
