Resident asks Alamogordo commission to draft palm-tree maintenance, neighbor-protection ordinance

Resident Gina Donahoe urged the commission to ask city staff and the city attorney to draft a palm-tree maintenance and neighboring-property-protection ordinance, saying neglected palms drop heavy fronds and debris that blow across yards and onto roofs and air-conditioning equipment. "Palm trees certainly add beauty and character to our community... It's about encouraging responsible maintenance so that one property owner's neglected trees do not create hazardous and financial burdens for the neighboring property owners," Donahoe said.
Donahoe said debris from palms had contributed to her home's air-conditioning unit shutting down and cited a replacement cost figure as high as $20,000 for some systems. She asked the commission to consider a formal maintenance requirement so neighbors would not bear cleanup costs and safety risks; commissioners thanked her and directed her to provide the proposal to the city clerk for staff review.
