Sustainability Commission workshop clarifies role, seeks tangible plans from city leaders

The Canal Winchester Sustainability Commission met July 1 for a facilitated workshop to clarify its role in advising the city and advancing sustainability work. Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler led the session and commissioners reviewed the commission’s ordinance and mission — to educate, advocate and engage the community on sustainable practices.
Canal Winchester Mayor Joe Steager said he wanted specific deliverables from the commission tied to city resources and staff: "I want to see tangible plans to increase sustainability in the City of Canal Winchester," he said. Commissioners responded that success will require buy‑in from city leaders, clear priorities, collaboration, predictable city staff presence and a budget commitment to execute events and programs.
The workshop emphasized both short-term activities the commission has run — such as Clean Up Day and community garage sale events — and longer-term roles like advising on zoning updates and contributing environmental research for city plans. Facilitators and commission members agreed to produce a written report and to coordinate with city officials on how the commission’s priorities should be staffed and funded.
