The commission recommended approval March 3 of a request to allow a lot with more than five sides after an applicant representative explained the owner bought an adjacent parcel and wants to consolidate it to access a rear piece for a barn. Rick Christiansen of Benton Hill Construction told the commissioners the owner plans to clear a small detached garage and reconfigure the property lines so the rear flag piece can be built on.
Staff said the application seeks a standard exception to the five‑sided lot rule in the subdivision code; commissioners inspected the diagram on the screen and asked questions about setbacks and compliance with building requirements. Commissioners found the consolidation reasonable given the existing lot shape and the applicant’s ownership of surrounding property, and they voted unanimously to recommend approval to the City Council. Staff noted the usual setbacks, height limits and utility requirements will still apply when the owner submits building permits.
