El Dorado County marks Probation Services Week; deputy chief says department supervises more than 1,000 felony cases

Michael Boyd, deputy chief probation officer, told the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors that the county’s probation staff supervise “more than 1,000 felony cases” and use evidence-based assessments, pretrial monitoring and rehabilitation practices to reduce incarceration and improve outcomes.
“This year’s Probation Services Week is connected for change,” Boyd said, adding that officers “build bridges between clients, families, victims and community partners” and that the department’s work aims to reduce recidivism and strengthen public safety. Boyd described specialized caseloads for domestic violence, veterans, DUI and individuals with serious behavioral-health needs and stressed partnerships with the courts, the district attorney’s office, the sheriff’s department and behavioral-health providers.
Board members thanked Boyd for the presentation. Supervisor Ferrero, who has a law-enforcement background, said she was “struck by how much they cared” and praised the department’s balance of accountability and compassion. Chair said the presentation was informational and required no action.
The presentation underscored the department’s role in coordinating with courts and community organizations; Boyd urged continued board support for staffing and programs that focus on risk reduction and long-term community safety. No formal action was taken; the item was filed as a presentation.
