Miramar authorizes $150,000 emergency food assistance program and directs manager to implement

Facing concerns about federal program interruptions and local food insecurity, the Miramar City Commission on Nov. 5 authorized the city manager to develop and implement an emergency food assistance program and allocated up to $150,000 for initial actions.
Vice Mayor Yvette Colburn said the item was intended to allow immediate action if federal SNAP/WIC benefits were disrupted during the holidays. Staff noted there are roughly 3,600 households in Miramar that receive SNAP benefits and over 1,000 seniors among them. The commission amended the resolution to set a $150,000 spending cap — above the city manager’s $75,000 threshold — so staff could take immediate steps while a longer plan is developed.
The manager will coordinate with local nonprofits and distribution partners and report back to the commission with recommended program parameters and any additional budget requests. Commissioners emphasized prioritizing seniors and other vulnerable residents and using existing channels for outreach and distribution.
