Council extends Bennett County policing agreement to Jan. 1; one member abstains

The Martin City Council voted Nov. 12 to extend its law-enforcement agreement with Bennett County through Jan. 1 to allow the city and county additional time to negotiate a new contract.
Council members reviewed recent police activity figures: 198 calls for service countywide, 124 of those in the city of Martin, 37 traffic tickets and 8 arrests. Janelle Haynes moved to approve the extension and the motion passed after a roll-call-style vote in which Councilmember Doug Lucero was recorded as abstaining. The council also authorized Mayor Gary Rayhill to sign the extension on behalf of the city.
Councilors said the extension will keep the existing contractual terms in place if a new contract is not finalized and provides breathing room for negotiations between the city and Bennett County commissioners.
