Local hospital-board vice chair defends proposed Broward collaboration bills

Angier said the bills "do not constitute a merger" of North Broward and South Broward hospital districts, because a legal merger would require legislative action and voter approval. She described an initiative called "Better Together" that would allow increased collaboration to reduce duplication, negotiate better contracts with insurers and suppliers, and lower uncompensated-care costs. "The bill... would allow greater collaboration between the 2 entities for the purpose of benefiting patients they serve," she said.
Vice Mayor Kazian asked why the bills were opposed in some quarters; Angier blamed private hospitals and lobbyists who pressured representatives. The commission did not take action on the legislation but heard the presentation and exchanged questions about the bills' status; Angier said the specific House and Senate bills were effectively dead for the current year but would likely return.
