Residents press Margate leaders to block more apartment projects

Several residents used public comment to oppose further apartment construction along key corridors in Margate.
Tracy (self-identified) and Tracy Van Winkle both said the community does not want more apartments and asked why the commission appears to be pushing more multifamily development. "We don't need any more apartments," one resident said, noting multiple projects already underway on Banks, 441, and other locations.
Commissioner Rosano and other commissioners responded with a mix of options and cautions. Rich Zucchini warned that the state "Live Local" legislation limits cities' rezoning authority in some cases and encouraged residents to attend meetings and engage early. Mayor Serio and other commissioners noted the city still has control of downtown property the city owns and can negotiate terms with developers there, but they also warned that new state bills could erode local authority on some parcels.
No formal zoning or rezoning vote occurred at the March 4 meeting. Commissioners said they would continue to discuss downtown redevelopment and review proposals as they come in.
