The Brookings County Planning & Zoning Commission approved application 2026VAR002 by Doug R. Osthus to build a 21'4"-wide by 37'4"-long attached garage with a 14-foot sidewall located 25 feet from the highest known water elevation, a variance from the ordinance-required 75-foot lakeshore setback. Staff reported the residence sits on a bluff above the lake and has been removed from the floodplain by a FEMA Letter of Map Amendment; the proposed garage would use the existing driveway and meet front and side yard setbacks. The motion to approve the lakefront variance passed unanimously, 8–0.
The staff report noted the subdivision (Marvin Wade Second Subdivision, platted Oct. 26, 1955) and described lot shape and size as considerations for the requested variance. No proponents or opponents spoke during the public hearing; findings of fact were reviewed, concurred with by Commissioner Cody Clark, and placed on file before the vote.
