A long public-comment block at the Margate CRA meeting drew repeated calls from residents to either reject apartments in the downtown redevelopment or set a strict cap now rather than approve a developer agreement with a high ceiling. Commenters said they want a retail-focused downtown that benefits local residents and were skeptical apartments would bring the promised benefits.
"I say no apartments at all," said Donna Fellowes, a Margate resident. Other speakers cited parking, emergency services capacity and the city’s tax base when arguing against multi‑hundred‑unit residential blocks in the downtown footprint. On the other side, some residents and several commissioners said that a mix including housing is necessary to attract quality restaurants and retail that can sustain a downtown core. The developer told the board that residential density helps finance public parking and retail space; commissioners said the DA will be followed by multiple opportunities for public input as designs are developed.
