CRA OKs sponsorships for three summer–fall events after resident questions about waivers

The Margate Community Redevelopment Agency voted to approve a sponsorship agreement with My Family Matters Foundation to stage Doc Greenhouse, Wing Fest, South Florida Italian Fest and a bacon, beer and barbecue event on June 20, Aug. 1 and Sept. 6, 2026 at the Margate Covered Sports Field.
Residents who spoke during public comment pressed the board on whether repeated fee waivers for the same nonprofit are fair and whether the city is receiving adequate return on investment for police, fire and parks and recreation staffing. “When is enough enough in granting waivers to use the covered field and paying for police and fire detail and parks and rec labor?” said Marty Kraljuk, a Margate resident. The CRA attorney and staff said policy requires waiver requests be presented to the board and that staff views these events as public benefits comparable to other concerts the CRA supports.
Board members acknowledged the need for clearer policy. One commissioner urged creation of a scheduled budget or cap for repeated waivers so the CRA can be benevolent without exceeding planned expenditures. After discussion the board called the roll and approved the sponsorship resolution.
