Commissioners and local school resource officers used the March 4 meeting to honor students and teachers through the city’s DARE program and student/teacher recognition awards. Officer Tony Coretta described the DARE curriculum and introduced winners from his school; other SROs and commissioners presented certificates for multiple schools across Margate.
"It's a 10 week program where we talk about drugs, alcohol, smoking, vaping, fentanyl, self-esteem, bullying," said Officer Tony Coretta as he described the DARE program’s scope and objectives. Coretta said his class includes about 175 fifth-graders and announced two essay winners, Manning and Joel. Liberty Elementary SRO Paul Lindeman presented an award for Paula Vera, noting she overcame early-year bullying and became more engaged at school.
The commission also presented Students and Teachers of the Month from Abundant Life Christian Academy, Ascend Academy, Broward Math and Science, Liberty Elementary, Margate Elementary, Margate Middle and Phil’s Academy. Recipients received certificates signed by the mayor and commissioners along with gift items (challenge coins, T-shirts, Calypso Cove passes, and small gift cards). Commissioners and staff urged parents to take photos during the recess and thanked teachers and school staff for ongoing support of the students.
The recognitions were ceremonial; commissioners recessed the meeting to allow photos and public attendees to gather before the commission resumed with proclamations.
