Commissioners ask TAC to reappraise historic status after courthouse hail damage

Commissioners asked staff to pursue a historic-property reappraisal after hail damaged courthouse windows, and staff said the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) will evaluate the building and estimate the incremental cost of historic-preservation requirements.
A staff member told the court that TAC will “come out and do a reappraisal of this building” and will provide a proposal for the difference in cost “over and above what we currently have on these buildings.” The staff member cautioned that the extra cost for historically sensitive repairs could be significant.
Commissioner Holt said the county does not currently have the historic-building insurance and that coverage “will be an option presented for the upcoming 10/01 budget potentially.” Staff confirmed they would include the information for the court to consider during the budget process.
