Commissioners approve $1.1M for wildfire dozers and mitigation equipment

The Commissioners Court approved a fire-code-funded purchase and budget transfer of $1,100,000 on Nov. 18 to buy equipment to support wildfire mitigation and response in Bexar County. Deputy Chief Mike Moreland of the Office of Emergency Management told the court the equipment will help create defensible space and support ESDs that sometimes must wait for state resources during large fires.
Commissioners framed the purchase as timely given drought conditions and recent large fires in South Bexar County that required private equipment assistance in initial response. The equipment will be deployed in partnership with local Emergency Service Districts; staff said the purchase will also support regional mutual-aid capabilities. The motion to approve was adopted unanimously.
