The Commissioners Court approved a request on Nov. 18 to cover 23,714 hours of mandatory overtime for uniformed officers at the adult detention center for the period ending Jan. 31, 2026. Sheriff’s office leadership told the court the department faces about 104 unfilled detention vacancies but is running cadet classes (51 in the academy with additional scheduled graduations) intended to reduce the gap.
The sheriff said inmate housing-out contracts and staffing shortages drive overtime costs; county staff and commissioners noted the overtime request equates to roughly $1.2 million and directed the sheriff’s office to continue filling cadet classes and to coordinate with budget staff on reporting and cost containment. The motion to approve the overtime package carried unanimously.
