Shelby County OKs $740,000 local match for Helena’s Buck Creek Trail project

The Shelby County Commission on July 13 approved providing $740,000 from the FY2026 General Fund as Shelby County’s share of the local match for the City of Helena’s Buck Creek Trail project.
Resolution 2026-07-13-10, moved by Commissioner Elwyn Bearden and seconded by Commissioner Robbie Hayes, records the project’s estimated construction and construction engineering cost at $7,400,000, of which $5,920,000 (80%) is federal CMAQ funding and $1,480,000 (20%) is the required local match. The county’s approved contribution equals half of that local match. Project documents in the packet describe the trail as 1.9 miles of new 10-foot-wide paved multi-use path with three pedestrian bridges, two overlooks and connections to Buck Creek Park, existing Hillsboro Trail and other local destinations; plans were described as 90% complete in packet materials.
The resolution delegates implementation actions to the County Manager and notes the City must provide the entire local match to ALDOT after bid opening for award of the construction contract.
