Brookings joint planning commissions weigh shortening legal-notice publication window

The Brookings County Planning & Zoning Commission and the City of Brookings Planning Commission met jointly on Feb. 3, 2026, where Deputy Director Richard Haugen presented a proposed update to the Joint Jurisdiction Zoning Ordinance. Haugen told commissioners the most significant change under consideration is shortening the required publication period for legal notices from fourteen (14) days to ten (10) days "to follow State Law," and he invited additional suggestions to be submitted to the County Development or City Community Development offices.
Commissioners were told the boards plan to hold a follow-up joint meeting on April 7, 2026 to accept public input and potentially take action on the ordinance changes. The Feb. 3 meeting record shows the session was called to order at 7:02 PM and adjourned at 7:09 PM. No public speakers were scheduled during the Feb. 3 meeting; the commission record lists staff present including County Development Director/Emergency Manager Robert Hill, Deputy Director Richard Haugen, Community Development Director Mike Struck, City Planner Ryan Miller, and Associate Planner Bailey Maca.
