Commission continues stone-care work: D2 cleaning and staff workshop for resetting

Commissioners described ongoing stone-care and preservation actions in the cemetery's older sections. Peter Williams said Preservation Inc. prepared a workshop to teach highway department staff how to straighten leaning stones and that volunteers have assisted with cleaning. "D2 is the certified safe substance for treatment of old stones to get rid of all of the old growth," Williams said, describing both scrub-and-wash and spray-and-wait application methods used to clean lichen and moss.
Pat Flynn added that highway staff will spray remaining stones when they have time and that the cleaned portions near the vault show the visible effect of the treatment. Commissioners said another instructional session is planned for the highway crew and volunteers and that restoring second-oldest sections could be proposed for CPC historic-preservation consideration this fall.
