The Housatonic Improvement Committee heard that the town manager and staff plan to apply for designation as a Housatonic Cultural District, which the chair said would elevate the village's profile and make state grants more accessible.
The chair told members that the application process will require a local partnership or committee that includes cultural-council representation and a community meeting; she said she would present the case to the Select Board on Aug. 10 and seek a letter of intent and a town proclamation to proceed. "We'll be able to, kind of have a lot more support," she said, urging members to help with asset mapping and outreach.
Committee members asked how to stay informed; the chair said members can schedule time with her or rely on automatic email updates and that a community meeting will be held between the Select Board action and February if the board supports the letter of intent. No formal vote was taken at the meeting to commit committee resources beyond preparatory work.
