Commissioners call Dinwiddie County a 'pharmacy desert' after local store closure

Commissioners reported that a Sutherland pharmacy is closing and described the county as increasingly experiencing a "pharmacy desert." One commissioner said local residents may be forced to travel to neighboring towns for prescriptions and noted insurance acceptance concerns.
"It's a sad day for Dinwiddie County," a commissioner said, adding that Walgreens in the northern part of the county "doesn't take Anthem," which may limit options for some patients. Commissioners suggested county staff continue to monitor access and that the local economic implications be considered as sites are redeveloped.
