VDOT updates Dinwiddie on Ferndale roundabout, Cherry Hill speed limit and pothole reporting

Paul Henson, a representative of the Virginia Department of Transportation, briefed the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors on local road projects and maintenance on Jan. 20. He said the Ferndale River Road roundabout was being bid, with the bid closing Jan. 28, and that resurfacing preconstruction meetings are scheduled in February.

"The Ferndale River Road roundabout is still being bid. The bid closes on the 28th," Henson said. He also told the board that Cherry Hill Road—part of a rural rustic project—has been posted at a statutory 35 mph under state regulation.

Henson urged residents and board members to report potholes through the VDOT online work-order page or by phone, saying the agency is required to investigate reported defects. "Once we have a work order, we're required to go investigate it," he said, and added that if a reported pothole has not been corrected within 48 hours they may be legally liable. He noted crews are preparing for an expected snow event and that some work may begin in early February depending on weather.

The presentation also included updates on preliminary engineering for the Reese Road rural rustic project and a note that signage changes near Fort Pickett will be made soon. Board members asked about road-edge failures and tire damage from potholes; Henson reiterated the work-order process and advised residents to call VDOT's phone line when needed.

The board did not take a separate vote on the presentation; it moved on after asking procedural questions of VDOT staff.
