Committee backs reallocating jail lock funds to upgrade CCTV servers after data retention failures

The Budget Committee recommended that the County Commission approve reallocating capital funds originally earmarked for new jail locks to upgrade the jail CCTV server, after hearing from Undersheriff Justin Ames that current failures limit internal video retention to around 24 hours. Committee members agreed improving video retention is a priority for operational and legal reasons and voted to forward the reallocation to the County Commission.
Undersheriff Justin Ames told the committee failures in recent months forced the department to reroute cameras and left the system able to recall only about 24 hours of footage, which has impeded responses to attorney requests and litigation. "We're now down to where we can only recall about 24 hours worth of video," Ames said, and proposed reducing the number of locks receiving immediate replacement so those funds could be shifted to an estimated $168,000 server upgrade. The committee recorded a motion, second, and unanimous recommendation to forward the reallocation to the BOCC for final action.
