The joint public safety & corrections and finance committees voted to accept a $327,000 bid to replace the jail’s fire panel and authorized transferring $67,000 from the public safety building reserve to the jail equipment and fire-panel project.
“SWe received 2 bids. One was $327,000 and the other was $3,200,000. We’d like to go with the $327,000,” the Sheriff said during the meeting. Committee members asked why bids differed; the Sheriff said the higher bid appeared to propose replacing the entire system rather than only the panel.
Committee members pressed on the condition of the current panel. When asked whether it was failing, the Sheriff said the unit is original to the building and “it’s aged and we can’t replace parts in it,” explaining that replacement parts are no longer available. The Sheriff also said the Department of Labor will assess the project and, if it meets their parameters, “there could be up to 75% reimbursement” of costs.
The Chair called for a voice vote after discussion; the motion to award the contract and approve the transfer carried by voice vote. The committee did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript. The committee moved on to subsequent agenda items after the approval.
