Union County issues multiple proclamations and names Marion Durkee Day ahead of her 100th birthday

At its April 16 meeting Union County proclaimed April 25, 2026 as Marion Durkee Day, April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, April 12–18, 2026 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, and April 26, 2026 as Confederate Memorial Day. The Marion Durkee proclamation recognized her community service and 100th birthday.
Commissioner Harold Collins read and presented several proclamations at the April 16 meeting. He proclaimed April 25, 2026 as Marion Durkee Day in recognition of Ms. Durkee’s nearly 50 years as a Union County resident and long service playing organ at her church; the proclamation was presented to Durkee and family members ahead of her 100th birthday.
Collins also proclaimed April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, urging countywide attention to prevention and survivor services; that proclamation was signed in the courthouse on March 24, 2026 with a representative from SAFE. The meeting record also includes proclamations for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (April 12–18, 2026) recognizing 911 dispatchers, and a Confederate Memorial Day proclamation (April 26, 2026) signed with representatives from the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
