Grant-funded VTI incubator and small-business wins highlighted in county update

County staff said a $400,000 Tobacco Commission grant will fund VTI incubator space for small manufacturers and highlighted program tenants including Bacon Street Bagels and Rustic Root Salon, which received a Start Small Campbell grant.
Nina said the VTI incubator project, funded by a $400,000 Tobacco Commission grant and based on a 2021 feasibility study, will build out unused square footage to create small manufacturing or soft-landing space (around 30,000 sq ft and smaller). "This is a tool for us where we don't have a lot of buildings in that range existing," Nina said.
She also updated supervisors on participants in business-support programs: Bacon Street Bagels is expected to open on Wards Road in August and Rustic Root Salon in Altavista opened in late May as a recipient of Start Small Campbell grant funding. Staff framed these as ongoing programs to strengthen the local business community and asked the board to continue support through the strategic planning process.
