Bill to create a State Seal of Climate Literacy moves forward with broad support

Senator Becker described SB 1048 as a voluntary credential modeled on the seal of biliteracy that would recognize students who complete approved climate-literacy coursework and an experiential learning project. "This measure creates a meaningful way for students to showcase valuable knowledge and skills on their diploma," the author said.
Cosponsors and witnesses — including 10 Strands, the California Environmental Literacy Initiative, teachers, students and county education offices — said many districts and community partners already offer relevant programs and that the seal would scale existing successes and help students access green-career pathways. The committee recorded a motion to pass SB 1048 as amended to appropriations, and the bill was reported out of committee on a recorded vote.
