Bill to bundle school shade-structure projects advances through committee

Senator Stern presented SB 1107 to expand eligible types of shade structures and allow multiple shade projects to be bundled through the design‑build process so districts can bid projects across sites and achieve economies of scale. "This is a critical bill for anyone who has kids on a blacktop... it's about getting some of that infrastructure online more quickly," the author said.
Sasha Horowitz for Los Angeles Unified described the bill as a continuation of previous work and said bundling and a modest expansion of permissible designs would lower per-structure costs. Climate and school‑infrastructure supporters, including the Climate Ready Schools Coalition and California School Boards Association, testified in support. The committee passed the bill as amended to appropriations with a recorded roll call.
