Bridge 51 estimate climbs to $8.5 million; county faces larger local share, officials say
Summary
County leaders reported the Bridge 51 project estimate rose from about $5 million to roughly $8.5 million, and because the federal match will not increase the county's local share could rise from around $1 million to nearly $4 million; officials noted levy funds have not been adjusted since 1992.

Commissioner Al Knable said when he took office in 2022 the Bridge 51 project estimate was about $5 million; recent figures now put the cost closer to $8.5 million. "The federal match will not go up so the County will have to shoulder close to $4 million instead of $1 million," Knable said, signaling a substantial local funding gap.
Officials noted the Cumulative Bridge Tax levy has not been adjusted since 1992. Knable said Stan Heil performed an analysis of levy-driven funds and the board will need to discuss statutory services and priorities before deciding how to respond to the cost increase.
Next steps: county leaders signaled they will analyze levy-driven funds and consider reallocation options; no formal vote or levy change occurred at the April 22 meeting.
