Forest Service outlines fuels projects, NEPA timeline for East Humboldt–Ruby Mountains

District Ranger Josh Nichols (speaker 7) gave multi‑point updates on fuels mitigation and NEPA work. He said roadside treatments with a masticator are planned in the Cherry Springs/Overland Pass area and that a decision for a 1,000‑foot Shantytown fuels break was signed; the Forest Service will coordinate a public meeting with Elko County Fire Protection District and the Nevada Division of Forestry to explain implementation and offer local access to fuel wood.
Nichols said specialist reports for the East Humboldt–Ruby Mountains NEPA are largely complete, Stantec is a NEPA contractor, and the Forest Service expects to sign a decision around June with possible implementation this fall. He added the Deer Mountain fuels project is slightly behind but could be implemented a month later, and he warned a hiring pause tied to a change in administration will limit seasonal hiring for recreation and weeds work though firefighting personnel remain staffed.
