Commission notes $79M in federal Congressionally Directed Spending for South Dakota projects

Secretary Joel Jundt, speaking in the Commission's Secretary’s Report, said the President signed most appropriations bills on Feb. 5, 2026, and identified several Congressionally Directed Spending awards that will be administered by the South Dakota Department of Transportation. "Rapid City Airport was approved to receive $20 million; Sioux Falls Airport was approved to receive $30 million; the Department was approved to receive $25 million for the SD 44 Platte‑Winner Bridge; and Box Elder will receive $4 million for US14/US16 preliminary design," Jundt reported.
The Department will oversee administration of those projects and will add any proposed changes to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) as necessary, Jundt said. The awards together total $79 million and affect airport infrastructure, a state bridge crossing and a local preliminary design effort in Box Elder. The Commission did not take separate votes to accept each CDS award; Jundt framed them as federal actions that the Department will implement and administer.
