Council directs staff to include two additional patrol officers in upcoming budget

The police chief presented patrol staffing data: the department has 82 sworn officers, of which 39 are assigned to the patrol division and an additional 11 support patrol in DOT/traffic roles. The chief told council the department averages about 26,000 calls for service annually and an average response time of roughly 6 minutes and 7 seconds across priorities.
Council discussed staffing options and the mayor requested adding two officers (one per patrol shift) to create a buffer for vacations and training. The city’s finance director confirmed that if council directed inclusion of the positions, the costs would appear in the budget presented in August. Council members agreed and staff will include associated costs in the budget materials.
