Parks staff explained how the La Porte Girls Softball Association schedules field time: every registered recreational team is provided two weekly practice slots, and if a scheduled game falls on a practice night the team receives an alternate practice night. Staff said the city is converting the North Side baseball field (Deautis/Deodoske referenced in the packet) to a dedicated softball field and intends to provide the girls' association access similar to what the boys' baseball association receives at Farrington fields.
Council members raised concerns that select teams—who often pay to rent additional time—have limited guaranteed practice slots during league season (one guaranteed night). Parks staff said converting that additional field and making Farrington field time available will provide more practice capacity and urged select teams to coordinate with the association in June when the converted field work is completed. "For spring and fall season, every team that is registered with the La Porte Girls Softball Association recreational program...they are given two practice times a week," the presenter said on the record.
