Board hears extended fiber outage report; staff plans data-center updates and redundancy work

Technical staff reported an extended fiber outage beginning Dec. 10 and continuing through Dec. 13 that caused channel outages; staff said the failure appeared related to electronic interface fiber cards and configuration changes at a Reno switch data center. "It appears during this outage, it was discovered that electronic interface fiber cards failed and the provider had overnight new equipment and set up," the operations lead said.
Staff outlined a remediation plan: test and update data-center software, perform field site surveys where customers report pixelation (including Kittridge Canyon), purchase or deploy new test equipment to better diagnose remote signal issues, and pursue a multipath redundancy project (NSHE fiber plus an air-microwave hop) to provide backup paths for critical services such as the 911 center. Staff also reported ongoing insurance discussions about transformers for Grindstone and said transformer delivery from Western Line Builders was expected soon.
