City says Abalone Cove sewer charge will rise with CPI; residents on system pay
Summary
Mayor Paseo said the July 21 council considered a routine CPI increase to the annual sewer service charge for the Abalone Cove system, stressing the need for operation and maintenance to prevent failures that could cause the area to be red-tagged.

Mayor Paseo told City Talk the sewer service charge for the Abalone Cove system is being adjusted via a built-in consumer price index (CPI) increase and that the residents who live in that system are the ones who pay the fee.
He emphasized that storm drains and sewer infrastructure are aging, require operation and maintenance, and that failure of sewers could lead to the area being red-tagged and uninhabitable until repairs are made. "If the sewers go out, it red tags the entire area," he said, arguing that regular O&M helps avoid more severe consequences.
No dollar amounts were provided during the program; the mayor characterized the change as not a surprise but a necessary step to keep infrastructure functioning.
