Residents press La Porte officials on Shore Acres debt, audits and fiscal risk

Officials explained the debt history: after Hurricane Ike Shore Acres sought funds to reconstruct roads and sewer; a needs study identified roughly $15,000,000 in required work but Shore Acres secured about $4,000,000 in loans for immediate needs. Panel members cited an outstanding figure in the ballpark of $3,700,000 and told residents that debt service on that amount would be roughly $200,000 per year and would be serviced from available revenues if consolidation happens.
City staff said projected annual revenue from Shore Acres property tax at the proposed lower tax rate is about $1,800,000, which staff expect will cover additional obligations though a full budget analysis remains to be completed at an upcoming budget retreat.
Officials emphasized transparency and invited residents to the budget retreat and to consult the city's consolidation materials online; they also said Shore Acres' city manager has been continuing operational work in case consolidation proceeds.
