Why that matters: canvass is the formal step that makes election results official. After canvass, the Shore Acres city council would cease to exist and the new territory would be part of La Porte. City staff said the La Porte council would then consider whether and when to redistrict to maintain equal representation.
City staff did not promise immediate elections or map changes. "We anticipate that at some point the city council, if this all goes on, right, that the city council would then decide to redistrict," the presenter said, adding that any redistricting would require public hearings and likely not be finished in time for the November election cycle. City officials said the more realistic timetable for elections reflecting new district lines would be May 2027.
