County reaffirms support for coyote calling contests, opposes added regulation

Jim Cooney, chair of the Elko County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife, briefed the commission on a State Wildlife Commission subcommittee that held hearings and took testimony on whether to ban or regulate coyote calling contests. Cooney said the advisory board voted unanimously to oppose regulatory changes limiting calling contests and that the state committee had not yet taken action.
Commissioners discussed options including reaffirming a 2021 county resolution and adding language to oppose not only bans but additional regulatory burdens such as license requirements or permit regimes. "We have to fight things like this," one commissioner said in response to a presentation from animal‑welfare groups; another commissioner proposed amending the motion to include opposition to further regulations. The commission amended the motion accordingly and carried it by voice vote, noting Commissioner Cooney would present the resolution to the State Wildlife Commission in Reno.
