Union County STR board raises 5% license cap after updated housing count

The Union County Short-Term Rental (STR) Board on April 13 said the county's STR license cap has increased after updated residential counts. Megan Kimsey, the board's SEO, reported that the Tax Assessor's Office lists 16,034 residential buildings as of Feb. 23, 2026, and that "5% of that number is 802, which raised the cap for STR Licenses by 42."
Kimsey also noted short-term rental tax collections were higher in December 2025, January 2026 and February 2026 compared with prior years, and provided the board with an "UC STR by the Numbers" packet. The board took the report as informational and did not modify the cap formula; the cap change follows the county's stated 5% rule tied to the assessor's count.
