County staff announces Round 5 of State Septic System Replacement Fund; homeowners may be reimbursed up to $10,000

Marie Myers Shearing informed the committee that Round 5 of the State Septic System Replacement Fund Program is open. Eligibility includes homeowners within 250 feet of designated environmentally sensitive waters—Steuben examples noted in the minutes include Keuka Lake, Waneta Lake, Smith Pond and Lake Demon—and applicants must have a failed or likely-to-fail septic system. Ms. Myers Shearing said the program is not income-based and does not apply to new construction.
The program is reimbursement-based: homeowners pay contractors and then are reimbursed 50% of the cost, up to $10,000. Ms. Myers Shearing clarified that Loon Lake is not included because the Department of Environmental Conservation determines which water bodies meet the program's criteria. Staff plans a public-information campaign with county Public Information Specialist Eddie Van Stine to alert eligible residents.
