Prosecutors press county to buy Axon digital-evidence system, warn of losing cases

A prosecutor urged the commission to fund a countywide digital-evidence system from Axon, saying new appellate rulings make integrated evidence tracking essential to preserving indictments. “The penalty for not having that thing disclosed is up to and including suppression of that evidence,” the prosecutor warned, arguing that missing digital items can kill cases even when investigations were otherwise solid.
The prosecutor described benefits beyond storage — including unlimited cloud storage, forensic tools and an API that would let agencies move evidence into a shared system automatically — and said Axon is now standard in roughly 21 Texas counties. He estimated the recurring cost for his office at about $79,000 a year and said bringing multiple offices to parity could increase the county’s recurring tab to roughly $110,000, though one county staff run initially reverted the request to a prior-year $65,000 line.
Commissioners pressed on price and alternatives; the prosecutor said adopting Axon could reduce TechShare storage costs and that some one-time migration costs might be borne by his office. County staff said restoring the two offices’ requests as presented would add roughly $110,000 to the proposed budget but that there are possible offsets from reduced TechShare expenditures.
The court agreed to leave the request in the proposed budget for further consideration ahead of the public hearing. Officials said staff will return with a clearer consolidated cost and options for one-time versus recurring funding.
