Commissioner urges inclusion of department heads in county budget planning

Commissioner Jared L. Valanzola told the board April 23 that he was concerned staff and department heads had been excluded from recent budget planning meetings and said those officials — including the Assistant County Administrator and the County Administrator-in-Training — should be included in future budget discussions.
Commissioner Gregory M. Hanley asked for a budget review meeting with himself and separately with Commissioner Valanzola. Administrator Frank Basler agreed to schedule meetings with both commissioners. Chair Sandra M. Wright suggested forming a budget subcommittee and proposed including Dr. Troy Clarkson; Valanzola questioned whether Clarkson’s participation or compensation was warranted given the Treasurer’s report of a current budget surplus. No formal change to the budget process was adopted at the meeting; the board set follow-up meetings and the subcommittee idea for future consideration.
